Review of Call of Juarez The Cartel
August 9, 2011 // 0 CommentsWith Rockstar decisively winning the Wild West in 2010, Ubisoft has turned Techland’s attention to the wilds of West Coast gang culture in CALL OF JUAREZ: THE CARTEL. Has 150 years been kind to the series, or is it High Noon for this once promising franchise?
I can’t settle on what was my favourite moment. Maybe it was my character answering their mobile during a gunfight. Then there was one of the AI partners heroically refusing to leave a burning barn. There’s also hearing the word ‘motherfucker’ in six consecutive lines of combat dialogue, surviving eight-story jumps off a rooftop, opening two doors that lead into a world of unfinished code, being followed by an angry invincible NPC for 20 minutes, passing away peacefully during a cut-scene, punching a man through the ground or grabbing a hooker by the throat. There’s just so many moments to choose from.
It’s impossible not to fall in love with the majestic passion project that is Call of Juarez: The Cartel. After the bittersweet tale of the McCall brothers in Civil War-era Bound in Blood and Ray and Billy’s tale in the original game, The Cartel makes the logical choice of ditching its storied past and keeping the name as an attention-grabbing keepsake. Set in modern day LA following the bombing of a DEA office by the Mendoza cartel, the three playable characters are recruited into a Super Top Secret Inter-Agency Taskforce to battle street gangs, stop border gun-running and avert a US incursion into Mexico.
