Catherine: A Female Perspective
August 8, 2011 // 1 CommentIn the aftermath of playing Catherine, the most common request I received from co-workers, friends and fellow VGW writers was “just tell me what it is about.” That is to say, they were looking for spoilers. Each time I explained the story of the game, I found myself finding more details that really did bother me. Please be warned there are mild spoilers contained within this postscript, however I will refrain from spoiling the multiple endings available, or the major plot points. You have been warned!
The Manic Pixie Dream Girl strikes again.
As I mentioned in my review, when I heard about the “mature” subject matter, I suppose I hoped for something original and actually “heavy,” rather than the trite rehashing of “men are afraid of commitment.” Yes, we know. As girls we have been fed this message in books, movies and soap operas for decades. This may sound like a minor gripe, but really, considering how much of the game is spent watching the plot unfold, it becomes a big issue. In fact, it makes me wonder for whom this game was directed. Before I played, it seemed to me to be more of a female-oriented game because, let’s face it, Gears of War has never considered the gentler sex as its target demographic (which is a shame because I’m a heckuva good shot).
Continuing along the rehashed stereotypes are Katherine and Catherine. The former is your standard controlling, seemingly-manipulative “chronic-sigher” type of female who just wishes that darn boy in her life would grow up! Anyone who has watched a Judd Apatow movie is familiar with with this female-as-eye-rolling-kill-joy. Catherine, on the other hand, is your standard manic-pixie-dream-girl who reminds the male character of the foot-loose and fancy-free life he may give up. This character appears in, well, most modern romantic comedies and is most often played by Sanda Bullock or Natalie Portman. As a female gamer, I’m sick to death of this character in venues other than video games. Please don’t start dragging these feather-heads into games. Okay, so if Catherine is not for girls, it must be for guys, right?
